A Shining Sellers Star

by Allison Schoonmaker, Maternity Counselor

Sellers Maternity Ministries seeks to provide single moms-to-be with housing, transportation, counseling, education, and lots of love.  Every resident at Sellers leaves a lasting mark on the staff and makes her way into our hearts.  This is the story of a recent graduate of the Sellers program and our joy as we’ve continued to watch her grow as mom and as an individual over this past year.

The night before Beth* moved in to Sellers she slept in a local motel.  She was 19, had tried life “on her own” for several years, but through a series of circumstances, Beth was no longer able to support herself financially.  She experienced tremendous guilt after having an abortion the previous year and her life spun quickly out of control with substance abuse and continued abusive relationships.  Beth knew she could not make the same decision for this pregnancy.  Her life to this point had been anything but easy, and much of what she expected to be her support system had either passed away, left, or was closed-off due to conflict.  To make matters worse, she just lost her job from pregnancy-related illness and was consequently unable to stay in her apartment.  As she drove herself to the Sellers campus, her car badly in need of repair, it was apparent:  Sellers was her last chance at salvaging her life. Once a Hardened Heart, Now a Happy Mom

by Rachel Adair

This past spring we received a call from a woman named Emily who wanted to come to our center to discuss her options.  When she came in, she was visibly pregnant and seemed very distraught.  She shared with Lydia, our nurse, that she wanted to have an abortion.  This was particularly upsetting because she appeared to be quite far along in her pregnancy.  Lydia began to ask her some questions about her situation.  Emily shared that she was not certain about the father of the baby, but the man whom she suspected was abusive and frightening.  She had experienced an unplanned pregnancy as a teen and was very wounded by the outcome of that situation.  Although Lydia provided education and counsel on adoption, Emily felt strongly opposed to this idea and regarded abortion as her only option.

Hartford Pregnancy Center
A Friend’s Story

September 2010

The mom chose to: Carry and Parent

Circumstances of Pregnancy:
Laura was counseling a woman who had had three abortions and was planning to attend the center’s abortion recovery program. For some reason even though her friend was not pregnant, she gave her a Bella movie. “A few nights later this woman called me in tears,” said Laura. “She had heard from her sixteen year old daughter who had gone to live with her father. Her daughter informed her crying that she was pregnant and dad had kicked her out.

How did Bella play a part in the mother’s decision?
My friend said that if she had not seen Bella she would have advised her daughter to get an abortion as she had done. Instead, she told her daughter to come home and she would help her raise the baby.”
